The hike doesn't go through the canyon. It leads around it. The "Auer Klamm" is a a popular canyoning spot in tyrol. You have a great view at the waterfalls and the river. If you're lucky you might even see brave sportlers jumping into the waterfall. Please inquire at your nearest Ötztal Tourism Information Office about the trail conditions during the winter months.
